## How do you use a chemical stripper on concrete?

Follow the product's technical data sheet for dwell time, which ranges from about 30 minutes for a single coat of latex to 24 hours for layered epoxy. Cover the treated area with plastic sheeting if the sheet allows it; slowing evaporation keeps the stripper active. When the paint wrinkles or bubbles across the whole patch, scrape it into a container with a stiff putty knife, then repeat on anything that did not lift.

Neutralizing and rinsing is not optional. Caustic strippers leave a high-pH residue that will wreck the adhesion of any coating you apply next, and solvent residue does the same. Rinse until the surface tests neutral, let it dry fully, and check the profile against ICRI's surface preparation guidance before recoating.

## When does pressure washing work, and when does it not?

Pressure washing works on thin, already-failing latex on exterior flatwork, and it fails on anything with real adhesion. A single coat of porch paint that is chalking and peeling will come off. Two coats of well-bonded epoxy in a garage will not, no matter how long you stand there.

Start at low pressure with a 25-degree tip and work up. High pressure through a narrow tip does remove paint, but it removes cement paste with it, leaving an eroded, exposed-aggregate texture that is permanent. If the surface starts to look rough or the aggregate starts showing, back off — you are now damaging the slab to chase paint.

Heat helps more than pressure for many coatings. A hot-water unit or a surface cleaner attachment gives more even results than a wand, which tends to leave stripes.

Pressure washing also creates the biggest waste-handling problem of any method, because it turns paint chips into a large volume of contaminated water that runs downhill on its own. Plan where it goes before you pull the trigger.

## How do you tell if the paint contains lead?

The RRP rule requires certified firms for compensated renovation work that disturbs lead paint in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities. Homeowners working on their own home fall outside the rule, but the exposure risk to their household is identical — follow the same containment practices anyway.

## When should you grind or blast instead?

Grind or blast when the area is large, the coating is well bonded, or chemical stripping has left ghosting in the pores. A walk-behind or hand-held diamond grinder is the standard approach for garage floors, basements, and warehouse slabs, and it doubles as the surface preparation step if you are recoating.

Grinding concrete generates respirable crystalline silica, which is regulated under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153. The permissible exposure limit is 50 µg/m³ as an 8-hour time-weighted average, with an action level of 25 µg/m³. The standard's Table 1 lists specified control methods for common tools — for hand-held grinders that means either integrated water delivery or a shroud with a HEPA-filtered dust collector, plus respiratory protection in the listed circumstances.

Dry grinding a floor with a shop vac and a dust mask is not a control method. The dust that method produces stays airborne for hours and travels through the whole building.

Abrasive blasting suits textured surfaces and walls where a grinder cannot maintain contact. Soda blasting is gentler on the substrate than sand or slag; all of them require containment and change the concrete surface profile, so check the required profile for your next coating before choosing the media.

## Where do the chips and rinse water go?

Paint chips, stripper sludge, and rinse water are waste streams you have to manage, not water you send to the curb. Storm drains discharge to surface water without treatment, and construction-site discharges are regulated under the EPA's NPDES stormwater program.

Practical handling looks like this. Sweep and vacuum chips into a sealed container before any water touches the area. Contain wash water with berms, a wet vacuum, or a collection mat, then dispose of it per your local sanitary district's rules rather than pouring it into a street inlet. Solidify liquid stripper waste with an absorbent before bagging it.

Lead-containing waste has its own disposal path, and household hazardous waste programs in most counties accept it. Call your county's program before you generate the waste, not after you have four buckets of it.
