# How to remove carpet glue from concrete

Remove carpet glue from concrete by softening it first and then scraping. Hot water or steam plus a long-handled floor scraper handles most water-based adhesive, and a citrus or soy remover handles the rest. Have black cutback adhesive tested for asbestos before you touch it, and never sand or grind it dry.

## How do you tell which adhesive you are dealing with?

Identify the adhesive by color, texture, and the age of the building. Three types cover almost every residential floor, and each responds to a different approach.

Multipurpose latex adhesive is yellow to amber, stays slightly tacky, and softens with hot water. Pressure-sensitive adhesive is a thin, clear-to-tan film that stays permanently tacky by design and usually responds to a citrus or soy remover. Cutback adhesive is black or very dark brown, asphalt-based, brittle when cold and gummy when warm, and it is the one that requires caution.

Age narrows it quickly. Buildings constructed or last re-floored before the mid-1980s are where cutback shows up, often under vinyl tile that was later carpeted over. Newer installations are almost always latex or pressure-sensitive.

Test a small area before committing to a method. Pour a cup of hot water on a patch and give it ten minutes — latex adhesive will go soft and gummy. Try a nickel-sized dab of citrus remover somewhere hidden and see whether the film releases. Whatever softens the glue in a test patch is the product to buy in volume.

If the adhesive is black and the building is old, stop and read the next section before doing anything else.

## Is black carpet glue dangerous?

Black cutback adhesive should be treated as asbestos-containing until a laboratory says otherwise. Asbestos was used in a wide range of building products, including resilient flooring and the adhesives used to install it, and there is no way to identify it by eye.

Testing is the only answer. Take a small sample following safe sampling practice, or hire an accredited inspector, and send it to a laboratory accredited for bulk asbestos analysis. The EPA's asbestos resources explain what materials are commonly suspect and how the material behaves when disturbed.

The rule that matters most is this: intact asbestos-containing material is far less hazardous than disturbed material. Sanding, grinding, dry-scraping, bead-blasting, and sweeping all release fibers into the air. The Resilient Floor Covering Institute publishes recommended work practices specifically for removing resilient floor coverings and their adhesives, and those practices are built around wet methods and no abrasion.

If a test comes back positive, hire an abatement contractor. OSHA's asbestos standard for construction regulates this work for employees, and licensing for abatement is set at the state level. Encapsulation — sealing the adhesive in place and floating new flooring over it — is often the cheaper and safer route, and many flooring manufacturers permit it.

## How do you remove water-based carpet adhesive?

Soften the glue, scrape it while it is soft, and repeat. Start by scraping the loose, brittle material dry with a long-handled floor scraper and a fresh blade — often a surprising percentage comes up with no chemicals at all.

Then work in sections of three or four square feet. Apply hot water, steam, or a citrus or soy adhesive remover, and give it the dwell time the label calls for, typically 20 to 60 minutes. Keep the area wet the entire time; a remover that dries out stops working and leaves a film that is harder to remove than the original glue.

Scrape with the blade at a low angle, pushing rather than chopping. Change blades often — a dull blade skates over adhesive that a sharp one lifts in sheets. Scoop the removed material into a bucket as you go instead of spreading it around, and wet-vacuum the slurry.

Rinse the floor thoroughly with clean water and let it dry completely. Citrus and soy removers leave an oily residue that blocks adhesion, so a detergent wash and a full rinse are part of the job, not optional cleanup.

Ventilate the space and check the product label for respiratory protection requirements, especially with solvent-based removers indoors.

## When do you need to grind the floor?

Grind when scraping and chemicals have taken the bulk off and a stubborn residue or ghosting remains, or when the area is too large for hand work. A walk-behind grinder or a floor buffer with an abrasive attachment removes the last film and profiles the slab at the same time.

Grinding concrete generates respirable crystalline silica, regulated under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153. The permissible exposure limit is 50 µg/m³ as an 8-hour time-weighted average with an action level of 25 µg/m³, and the standard's Table 1 lists specified control methods by tool — for grinders that means water delivery or a shroud with HEPA-filtered dust collection.

Warm adhesive gums up abrasives fast, which is why grinding works better as a finishing step than a first step. Trying to grind a floor still covered in soft glue clogs the tooling within minutes and costs more in abrasives than the chemical removal would have.

Never grind, sand, or bead-blast adhesive that has not been cleared for asbestos. That single decision converts a routine flooring job into a contaminated building.

## Can you paint, tile, or coat over carpet glue?

Painting, tiling, or coating over residual carpet glue fails, because adhesive is a bond breaker. Epoxy coatings, sealers, thinset, and self-leveling underlayment all need a clean, sound, absorbent substrate, and every one of those product categories states that requirement on its technical data sheet.

What happens is predictable. The new material bonds to the glue instead of the concrete, and the glue is only as attached as it ever was — usually less, after decades and a solvent exposure. Delamination shows up in weeks to months as hollow spots, blisters, or tile that lifts in sheets.

Check the surface profile before installing anything. ICRI publishes concrete surface profile guidance, and the flooring or coating manufacturer specifies the profile their product requires. The water-drop test is a quick field check: drops that soak in within a minute mean the slab is open and absorbent.

Test the slab for moisture at the same time, using either the calcium chloride method in ASTM F1869 or the in-situ relative humidity method in ASTM F2170. New flooring adhesives have moisture limits, and a slab that passed a visual inspection can still be far too wet.

The one legitimate exception is encapsulation over cleared or abated adhesive, when the new flooring manufacturer explicitly approves a floating installation.

## Common mistakes

- **Grinding or sanding black adhesive without testing** — if it contains asbestos, the dust contaminates the entire building and the cleanup costs many times the flooring job.
- **Letting the remover dry out** — the softened adhesive sets back up harder than it started, and the second pass takes longer than the first would have.
- **Scraping with a dull blade** — the blade rides over the film instead of lifting it, so the work takes hours longer and leaves ghosting behind.
- **Skipping the rinse after a citrus or soy remover** — the oily residue left behind blocks the bond of whatever flooring goes down next.
- **Installing over residue because it "looks clean"** — adhesive is a bond breaker at any thickness, and the new floor delaminates within months.
