Bag count calculator

Converts a volume into a bag count. Bag yields below come from Quikrete and Sakrete technical data sheets; formulations vary, so check the bag you are actually buying. Past roughly 40 bags, ready-mix delivery is usually cheaper and always easier.

Bags required per cubic yard, by bag size
Bag sizeYieldBags per yd³
80 lb0.60 ft³45
60 lb0.45 ft³60
50 lb0.375 ft³72
40 lb0.30 ft³90

The formula

volume (ft³) × (1 + waste) ÷ bag yield (ft³) = bags, rounded up

Worked example

12 ft³ with 10% waste = 13.2 ft³. At 0.60 ft³ per 80 lb bag: 13.2 ÷ 0.60 = 22 bags.

Assumptions

  • Yields are manufacturer TDS figures: 80 lb ≈ 0.60 ft³, 60 lb ≈ 0.45 ft³, 50 lb ≈ 0.375 ft³, 40 lb ≈ 0.30 ft³.
  • Formulations differ between products and brands — verify against the bag.
  • A pallet is typically 42 bags, but pallet counts are set by the retailer.
