Acid stain: When it wins
You want a mottled, natural, stone-like result and you accept that no two slabs come out the same. It also cannot peel, which matters on a floor that will see wear.
Water-based stain: When it wins
You need a specific colour, a colour outside the earthtone range, or a predictable result across a large area. Also the safer choice for a first-time DIY application.
