What does the Minnesota climate require?

The deepest frost lines in the contiguous states combined with heavy deicing salt; ACI 306 cold-weather protection is needed roughly November through April and footings go well below five feet in the north.

Under ACI 318, Minnesota falls in exposure classes F3, C2, S0. Air entrainment is required for exterior flatwork. Air entrainment is required for classes F1, F2 and F3.

How deep is the frost line in Minnesota?

Compiled reference tables put Minnesota at about 80 inches. That figure is orientation only. The footing depth you actually have to build to is determined by your local building department — IRC R403.1.4 requires footings to extend below the locally determined frost line, and there is no national number.

Soil concerns

Glacial till and lacustrine clay cover the state, and the Red River Valley's fat clay in the northwest swells, shrinks and heaves severely under shallow slabs.

Seismic

Very low seismicity. No seismic detailing is required for residential flatwork.
