Broom finish

Dragging a stiff broom across a floated surface to create fine parallel grooves. It is the standard slip-resistant texture for exterior US flatwork.

What does broom finish mean?

Broom texture provides traction when wet and hides minor surface irregularities, which is why it dominates driveways, sidewalks, and patios. Broom timing matters: too early and the grooves close back up, too late and the broom tears the surface. Direction is conventionally perpendicular to traffic, and consistency of pressure is what separates a clean finish from a ragged one.

In practice

Virtually every residential driveway and sidewalk in the country carries this finish, and it is the correct choice for air-entrained exterior concrete.
