Consolidation

Working entrapped air out of freshly placed concrete so it fully surrounds reinforcement and fills the form. Poor consolidation leaves voids that reduce strength and durability.

What does consolidation mean?

Consolidation is achieved with internal vibrators, form vibrators, rodding, or by the self-weight of highly flowable mixes. The goal is removing the large accidental voids while leaving intentionally entrained air intact, which is why over-vibration is as harmful as under-vibration. Voids at the form face are cosmetic; voids around rebar are structural.

In practice

On a wall pour the vibrator operator, not the pump operator, determines whether the finished wall has honeycombing.
