Fiber-reinforced concrete
Concrete containing dispersed fibers of steel, synthetic polymer, or glass to control cracking and improve toughness after cracking occurs.
What does fiber-reinforced concrete mean?
Fiber type and dosage determine what the fibers actually do, ranging from early plastic-shrinkage control to genuine post-crack structural capacity in industrial floors. Fibers change workability, so mixes are usually adjusted with admixtures, and very high dosages can make finishing difficult. Fibers distributed through the section provide reinforcement everywhere rather than at one plane.
In practice
When a supplier quotes a 'fiber mix,' the important question is which fiber and at what dosage, because those two answers determine what you are buying.
