How do you remove oil stains from concrete?

Blot or absorb any fresh oil first, then scrub the surface with a degreaser and hot water. Oil that has already soaked in needs a poultice: an absorbent powder mixed with a solvent, spread over the stain and left to dry so it pulls the oil back out. Old stains take several cycles.

Short version

  • Soak up liquid oil before you touch it with water — washing spreads it and drives it deeper.
  • A degreaser removes surface film. It does not reach oil that is already inside the pores.

How do you get fresh oil off concrete?

Fresh oil comes off with absorption, not water. Cover the puddle with a dry absorbent — cat litter, sawdust, diatomaceous earth, or a commercial oil absorbent — and let it sit until it has taken up the free liquid. Sweep it into a bag rather than hosing it down; water only carries the oil across the slab and pushes it into pores you had not stained yet.

Once the liquid is gone, scrub the film with a degreaser and hot water using a stiff brush, then rinse. Concrete is porous, so the clock matters: minutes on a sealed floor, and much less on bare concrete, before oil starts migrating below the surface where a brush cannot follow.

Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection when handling degreasers and solvents. OSHA identifies dermal exposure as a recognized hazard around concrete work and the chemicals used on it.

What is a poultice and how do you use it on an oil stain?

A poultice is an absorbent material carrying a solvent, used to pull a stain back out of the concrete instead of pushing it further in. CMHA describes the method for cementitious surfaces: mix a fine absorbent — talc, fuller’s earth, diatomaceous earth, or even paper towel — with the solvent appropriate to the stain until it forms a thick paste.

Spread it over the stain roughly a quarter to a half inch thick and a little wider than the stain itself. Cover it with plastic taped at the edges for the first several hours so the solvent has time to dissolve the oil, then remove the cover and let the poultice dry completely. As the solvent evaporates it carries the dissolved oil up into the absorbent. Scrape off the dry residue, rinse, and evaluate. Test any solvent on a hidden area first, because solvents can discolor colored or sealed concrete.

Do pressure washing and degreasers remove old oil stains?

Pressure washing and degreasers remove the top layer of an old stain but rarely all of it. Both act on the surface, and an aged oil stain is a three-dimensional problem — the oil has wicked down into the capillary pores of the paste. That is why a driveway looks clean while wet and shows the same dark patch once it dries.

Use them as the first pass, not the whole plan. Degrease and wash, let the slab dry fully, then look at what is left and treat that with a poultice. Hold the pressure washer wand moving and at a consistent distance; parking it on one spot erodes the paste and leaves a lighter, rougher clean spot that reads as its own stain.

Where the wash water goes matters too. EPA’s construction stormwater program treats concrete wash water as a pollutant to be contained rather than released, and adding a degreaser or solvent makes that more important, not less.

Why does acid make an oil stain worse?

Acid does not dissolve oil, so it attacks the only thing it can — the concrete. CMHA guidance warns that strong acids and strongly acidic products should be avoided on cementitious surfaces, and that even weak acids dissolve the cement matrix beginning at the surface. On an oil stain, that means you etch away paste while the oil in the pores below stays where it is.

The result is usually two problems instead of one: the stain, plus a lighter, rougher, more absorbent patch that soils faster than the concrete around it. NRMCA’s guidance on discoloration makes the same point in reverse — once the surface layer of a slab is changed, the color difference is generally permanent because it is a property of the concrete, not something sitting on it.

How do you keep oil stains from coming back?

A penetrating sealer is what keeps oil out of the pores. Sealers do not make concrete stain-proof; they buy time by slowing absorption, which turns a permanent stain into a spill you can wipe up. On a garage floor or driveway, that difference decides most outcomes.

Reseal by behavior rather than by date: when water stops beading and starts darkening the surface, the sealer has worn through there. Under a vehicle that drips, a drip pan or a mat costs less than any of this. And clean spills the day they happen — every hour of dwell time moves the oil further into the slab.

Timing matters on a new slab too. ACI’s floor and slab guidance ties the performance of any surface treatment to the condition of the concrete underneath, so seal only after the slab has released its construction moisture and the surface is clean and dry. Sealing over a damp or dirty floor traps the problem and the coating fails from below.

Common mistakes

  • Hosing down a fresh spill — water spreads the oil across the slab and drives it into pores that were clean.
  • Stopping after the degreaser — the surface film comes off, the penetrated oil stays, and the stain reappears as the slab dries.
  • Applying a poultice too thin or removing it wet — the solvent has to evaporate through the absorbent to carry the oil out with it.
  • Reaching for muriatic acid — it etches the paste, leaves a light rough patch, and does nothing to the oil.
  • Judging progress on a wet slab — everything looks clean wet; evaluate only after the concrete has dried completely.
