Why cast a countertop upside down?

What mix should a countertop use?

Fibres distributed through the batch control shrinkage cracking, and ladder wire or mesh at mid-depth handles the bending stresses that occur when the piece is demoulded, transported and set — which is often when a countertop actually breaks. How much maintenance does a concrete countertop need?

Sealing is the whole answer, and it is ongoing. Concrete is porous, so an unsealed top stains from oil, wine, citrus and anything acidic — and acid also etches the surface, leaving a dull mark that sealing afterwards will not remove. For a food-preparation surface the sealer needs to be rated food-safe once cured; penetrating sealers, film-forming sealers and wax systems each behave differently and have different reapplication intervals.

Day to day, treat it as you would natural stone. Wipe spills promptly rather than letting them sit, use a pH-neutral cleaner, and use cutting boards and trivets — the sealer, not the concrete, is what a knife or a hot pan damages. Expect hairline cracks over time. They come from shrinkage and from normal movement in the cabinetry beneath, and in this material they are generally accepted as character rather than treated as failure.
