How long does it take for concrete to settle?

Placing a concrete slab is usually a one-day operation; the schedule around it is what takes time. Excavation and base preparation come first, forming and reinforcement next, then the pour and finish in a single continuous session. After that, three to seven days of curing and 28 days to design strength.

What is the difference between curing and drying?

Curing and drying are different processes, and confusing them causes real failures. Curing is hydration — cement reacting with water to build the crystal structure that gives concrete its strength. It needs water present to continue. Drying is water leaving the slab afterward, which matters for flooring adhesives and coatings but has nothing to do with strength development.

The practical consequence is that letting a slab “dry out” early stops the reaction that makes it strong. A slab that dried fast in sun and wind is weaker and more prone to surface dusting and cracking than one kept damp for a week.

How do you actually cure a slab?

Curing means keeping water in the concrete, and there are three practical ways to do it. You can keep the surface continuously wet with sprinklers, soaker hoses, or wet burlap. You can cover it to stop evaporation, using plastic sheeting or curing blankets. Or you can spray a membrane-forming curing compound that seals moisture in, specified under ASTM C309.

Whichever you choose, the failure mode is the same: intermittent wetting. Letting the surface dry between soakings causes surface crazing, because the top repeatedly shrinks against a damp interior. Continuous is the operative word in the specification.

When can you walk on it, and when can you drive on it?

Foot traffic is normally acceptable after 24 to 48 hours, and vehicles after about seven days. Both figures are industry convention rather than code, and both move with temperature: cold weather slows hydration substantially, so a slab poured at 40°F is well behind one poured at 70°F on the same schedule.

For anything heavier than a passenger car — a loaded truck, a dumpster, a skid steer — wait the full 28 days or ask the supplier for cylinder break results. Early loading is one of the few mistakes that cracks a slab in a way no repair fully fixes.
