How to paint concrete driveway?

Preparation decides whether a coating on a concrete driveway lasts. The slab must be clean, dry, and profiled — mechanically ground or acid-etched — because coatings fail on contamination, not on age. New concrete waits the full 28 days. Two thin coats outperform one thick one.

What kind of sealer should you use?

The choice is between penetrating and film-forming, and it follows what you need the slab to do. Penetrating sealers — silanes and siloxanes — soak into the pore structure and react there. They change the appearance almost not at all, they do not peel because there is no film to peel, and they are the right answer for exterior flatwork facing freeze-thaw and deicing salt.

Film-forming sealers sit on the surface. Acrylics are the common choice for a wet look on stamped and colored work, and they renew the color. Epoxies and polyurethanes are harder and are used on garage and interior floors. The tradeoffs are real: films can be slippery when wet, they show wear patterns, and they eventually need stripping rather than simple recoating.

How long should new concrete cure before sealing?

Wait the full 28 days on new concrete. Sealing early traps moisture that is still working its way out of the slab, and the result is a cloudy, blushed film or a penetrating sealer that never bonds properly.

There is one exception worth knowing: cure-and-seal products under ASTM C1315 are formulated to be applied to fresh concrete, doing the curing job and leaving a sealing film behind. Those are a deliberate product choice made at placement, not a shortcut you apply to a slab poured last week.

How do you apply sealer without ruining it?

Preparation decides the outcome. The slab has to be clean and dry — sweep, degrease any oil, remove any previous failing sealer, and let it dry completely. Sealing over dust, moisture, or a failed film guarantees the new coat comes off with the old one.

Apply thin. Two light coats with the recommended dry time between them outperform one heavy coat every time, because thick films trap solvent, cloud, and lift. Work in the shade or in the cooler part of the day; sealer applied to hot concrete in direct sun flashes off before it can level or penetrate. Follow the product data sheet for coverage rather than working from the general 200 to 400 square feet per gallon range.
