How do you cut concrete pavers?

Short version

What tool should you use to cut concrete pavers?

Match the tool to how many cuts you have and how clean they need to look. A dozen cuts along a walkway is a different job from three hundred cuts around a curved patio.

A splitter, sometimes called a guillotine or block splitter, is worth renting for a large job with straight cuts. It works by hydraulic pressure rather than abrasion, so it makes no dust and needs no power, and the rough fracture face actually suits tumbled and rustic pavers.

Blade choice matters as much as the tool. Segmented rims cut fast and clear debris well, turbo rims cut smoother, and continuous rims used wet leave the cleanest edge for visible cuts. Always check that the blade’s rated speed equals or exceeds the tool’s RPM.

How do you cut a paver with an angle grinder?

Mark the cut line on both faces with a pencil and a straightedge, carrying the line down the sides so you can see it from every angle. Set the paver on a stable, sacrificial surface, never on the finished field or on your leg.

Score a shallow groove along the line on the top face first, roughly an eighth of an inch deep, using the guide line rather than trying to cut through in one pass. Flip the paver and score the same line on the bottom face. Scoring both sides is what keeps the cut from wandering and stops the back edge from blowing out.

Deepen both grooves in successive passes. Most 4.5-inch grinders cannot reach through a standard paver from one side, which is exactly why the two-sided approach exists. Once the grooves are deep, either finish the cut from the sides or snap the piece along the scored line with a sharp blow from a mason’s hammer.

Keep the guard on and the blade square to the work. A blade tilted in the kerf binds and kicks, and a grinder kicking back at that speed is the most dangerous thing on the site.

For curves, make a series of straight relief cuts up to the line and knock out the waste, then dress the edge with the blade held flat.

Should you cut pavers wet or dry?

Cut wet whenever the tool allows it. Water suppression knocks down the respirable dust at the source, cools the blade so it lasts substantially longer, and produces a cleaner edge with less chipping.

The tradeoff is slurry. Wet-cut residue is fine cement paste that stains pavers if it dries on them, so cut away from the finished surface and rinse any splatter off immediately rather than letting it set.

Dry cutting is faster to set up and leaves no mess to chase, which is why it stays common for one or two cuts. It generates far more airborne dust, so it demands a HEPA dust collection shroud on the tool, or at minimum working outdoors, upwind, with respiratory protection.

Not every tool runs wet. Confirm the manufacturer’s guidance before adding water to any electric tool, and never use water with an electric tool that is not rated for it.

How do you control silica dust when cutting pavers?

Cutting concrete pavers releases respirable crystalline silica, and OSHA’s construction standard, 29 CFR 1926.1153, is the reference. It sets a permissible exposure limit of 50 µg/m³ as an 8-hour time-weighted average and an action level of 25 µg/m³.

Table 1 of that standard lists specified control methods by task. For stationary masonry saws it identifies integrated water delivery. For handheld power saws it identifies water delivery along the blade, with respiratory protection requirements that vary by duration and by whether the work is indoors or outdoors. Employers following Table 1 fully and correctly are not required to separately assess exposures.

The practical setup for most patio jobs is a saw with a water feed, or a grinder with a dust shroud connected to a HEPA-filtered vacuum. A standard shop vacuum without a HEPA filter passes the finest particles straight through and back into the air you are breathing.

Position yourself upwind, keep other people out of the cutting area, and do the cutting in one spot rather than spreading dust across the whole site. Silica damage accumulates over a career and does not reverse.

How do you lay out cuts so the patio looks right?

Lay the whole field of full pavers first, running them past the intended edge, then mark and cut the perimeter in place. Snapping a chalk line across the laid field and cutting to it gives a far straighter edge than measuring and cutting each piece individually.

Plan the layout so cut pieces do not end up as thin slivers. Anything narrower than about a third of a unit is fragile, works loose under traffic, and looks like a mistake. Shifting the starting course by half a unit usually moves the problem.

A border or soldier course around the perimeter is the standard way to hide cuts. Cuts land against the border rather than at the visible outer edge, which makes small variations disappear.

Cut on a bench or on scrap material set off the finished surface. Cutting on top of laid pavers grinds slurry and dust into the surface and marks the joints.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting from one side only — the blade wanders off the line and the back face blows out in a ragged chunk.
  • Using a blade rated below the tool’s speed — an overspeed blade can come apart, and there is no protective gear that makes that survivable.
  • Dry cutting with no dust control — respirable silica exposure is cumulative, and a water feed or HEPA shroud costs almost nothing.
  • Letting wet-cut slurry dry on the pavers — cement paste bonds to the surface and leaves a haze that resists ordinary cleaning.
  • Ending the field with sliver cuts — narrow pieces crack, shift under traffic, and draw the eye straight to them.
