Short version

Why does concrete crack even when it is done right?

Concrete cracks because it shrinks. As the mix loses water — both to hydration and to evaporation — the hardened material occupies slightly less volume than it did when placed. If the slab is restrained by subgrade friction, by reinforcement, or by anything it is cast against, that shrinkage produces tensile stress.

Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension, roughly a tenth as strong. Once the shrinkage stress exceeds that tensile capacity, it cracks. This is why cracking is treated as something to control and direct rather than something to eliminate.

How far apart should control joints be?

The working rule is that joint spacing in feet equals two to three times the slab thickness in inches. A 4-inch slab gets joints every 8 to 12 feet; a 6-inch slab every 12 to 18 feet. Keep panels close to square — a length-to-width ratio beyond about 1.5 to 1 encourages a crack straight across the middle of the panel regardless of the joints.

Depth matters as much as spacing. The cut has to be about a quarter of the slab thickness to create a weak plane the crack will actually follow. A joint cut too shallow does nothing, and the slab cracks where it wanted to.

When should control joints be cut?

Timing is a narrow window and it moves with the weather. With a conventional wet or dry saw, cutting generally happens 6 to 18 hours after placement — late enough that the edges do not ravel, early enough that shrinkage stress has not yet cracked the slab. Early-entry saws move that window much earlier, often within a few hours.

Hot, windy conditions compress the window sharply, sometimes to a few hours. The two failure modes are opposite and both permanent: cut too early and the blade tears the surface, cut too late and you are sawing a slab that has already cracked.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting joints too shallow — below about 25% of thickness the joint does not control anything and the slab cracks elsewhere
  • Making panels long and narrow — aspect ratios beyond about 1.5:1 crack across the middle regardless of joint spacing
  • Treating every crack as a defect — shrinkage cracking is expected; the distinction that matters is width, offset, and whether it is growing
