How to drill into concrete wall?

Fastening into a foundation wall depends on load and on whether the concrete is cracked. Mechanical anchors expand against the hole wall; adhesive anchors bond into it and hold more in tension. Drill to the specified depth, blow the hole clean — dust is the single most common cause of adhesive anchor failure — and respect edge distance.

What tools does a small concrete pour actually need?

Fewer than the catalogue suggests, but each one does a job nothing else does. You need a screed board to strike the surface level with the forms, a bull float to flatten and embed aggregate immediately afterwards, an edger to round the perimeter, a groover to cut control joints, and a hand float for final texture. A steel trowel goes on the list only if the slab is interior.

For a bagged pour add a wheelbarrow or mixer, a hoe or shovel for mixing, and a level. For safety, waterproof gloves, eye protection and knee protection are not optional — wet cement causes alkaline burns that are often painless until the damage is done. Everything else is convenience: kneeboards for reaching the middle of a large slab, a fresno for a longer reach, a stiff broom for the final finish.

What is the difference between a magnesium float and a steel trowel?

They do opposite things to the surface. A magnesium or wood float opens the surface, bringing paste up and leaving a slightly textured, more porous finish. A steel trowel closes the surface, pressing the paste flat and densifying the top layer into something hard and smooth.

That difference decides where each belongs. A steel-trowelled surface is right for an interior floor — a garage, a basement, a warehouse — where you want density and easy cleaning. It is wrong outdoors, because a closed, polished surface is genuinely slippery when wet and traps less air in the paste, which makes it more vulnerable to freeze-thaw scaling. Exterior flatwork gets floated and then broom-finished, which is why almost every sidewalk you have walked on has visible broom lines.

When is a mixer worth it over mixing by hand?

Roughly ten bags is the crossover, though it depends more on how long the pour will take than on the total volume. Mixing 80 lb bags in a wheelbarrow with a hoe is genuinely hard work and gets slower as you tire, which matters because concrete does not wait — a slab placed over ninety minutes in three-bag batches can develop cold joints between batches if the earlier concrete stiffens.

A portable electric mixer keeps the batch rate steady and consistent, which is the real argument for it. Above roughly half a cubic yard, though, the better answer is usually neither: ready-mix delivered is cheaper per yard than bagged concrete and arrives as one continuous placement, which removes the cold-joint risk entirely. Bags make sense for small pours, awkward access, and jobs where a truck cannot reach.
