What the test involves
It builds on the idea of a membrane-forming curing compound but adds durability requirements the film must meet to serve as a lasting sealer, addressing properties such as resistance to yellowing, chemical exposure, and abrasion, along with classification by gloss level and solids content. Higher solids content generally means more film left behind per gallon. Products are graded so a specifier can match appearance and durability to the application.
Common misconceptions
- Cure-and-seal is not automatically the better choice over a plain curing compound. On slabs receiving flooring or coatings it creates a bond problem the cheaper product would not.
- It is not a substitute for a penetrating sealer in freeze-thaw or deicing-salt exposure, where a surface film can trap moisture rather than repel it.
- Reapplying a cure-and-seal over a dirty or previously sealed slab commonly produces peeling and cloudiness, so surface preparation still matters.
