Truckload & short-load calculator

Truck capacity, minimum load size and short-load fees are set by each individual supplier — there is no national standard. Change the defaults below to match the quote you were given.

This calculator needs JavaScript. The reference table below covers the common cases.

Typical delivery figures — supplier-set, not standardized
ItemTypical range
Truck capacity8–10 yd³
Short-load fee$40–60 per yard short
Fuel surcharge$20–40 per load
Distance surcharge$5–10 per mile beyond base radius

The formula

ceiling(volume ÷ truck capacity) = trucks; short-load fee applies when the last load falls under the supplier's minimum

Worked example

14 yd³ with a 10 yd³ truck: 2 trucks. The second carries 4 yd³. Against a 6 yd³ minimum it is 2 yd³ short — at $50 per short yard, about $100.

Assumptions

  • Truck capacity of 8–10 yd³ is typical, not a standard. Suppliers vary.
  • Short-load fees of roughly $40–60 per yard short are typical and supplier-set.
  • Material price defaults to $165/yd³, mid-range for the US. Sources disagree substantially — see our price methodology.
  • Excludes fuel surcharge, distance surcharge beyond the base radius, and pump costs.
