How wide is a concrete truck?

A ready-mix truck body is built to the federal 102-inch limit for commercial vehicles, so figure about 8.5 feet wide and roughly 10 feet with the mirrors out. No national standard sets mixer truck dimensions. For access, plan on a 12-foot clear path, firm ground, and somewhere the driver can turn around.

How wide is a ready-mix truck?

Roughly 8.5 feet across the body, because federal regulation caps commercial vehicle width. Under 23 CFR 658.15, no state may impose a width limit other than 102 inches on the National Network, with Hawaii allowed to keep a 108-inch maximum. Truck bodies are built right up to that ceiling, which puts a mixer at about 8 feet 6 inches wide.

Mirrors are what people forget. Extended west-coast mirrors add roughly a foot on each side, so the width a driver actually has to thread is closer to 10 feet. Drivers can fold mirrors in tight spots, but they need them to back up.

There is no national standard for the mixer truck itself. Wheelbase, drum size, number of axles, chute length, and load capacity are all set by the individual manufacturer and the supplier’s fleet choices, which is why the truck your supplier sends may not match a figure you found elsewhere. Front-discharge and rear-discharge trucks differ in length and turning behavior more than in width.

Ask your supplier what they are sending. They know the dimensions of their own fleet and they deal with tight residential access every day.

How much clear width do you need for access?

Twelve feet of clear, unobstructed path is a reasonable planning figure for a residential delivery, and more is better. That extra margin covers mirrors, the driver’s sight lines, and the fact that a loaded mixer cannot make small corrections once it commits to a line.

Measure the pinch points specifically. Gate posts and fence openings are the most common obstruction, followed by mailbox posts, retaining wall ends, parked cars, and low landscape boulders. Measure between the actual obstructions at truck height, not at ground level, since a flared gate post or an overgrown hedge narrows the gap where the mirrors ride.

Turning matters more than straight-line width. A mixer needs a wide swing to enter a driveway from the street, and the rear of the truck sweeps outside the path of the front wheels. A driveway that a passenger car turns into easily can be impossible for a three-axle truck.

Plan the exit too. A driver who has to back 150 feet down a curving residential driveway, at night, past a parked car, may reasonably decline.

Can a concrete truck drive on your driveway?

Usually it should not. A ready-mix truck loaded with concrete is one of the heaviest vehicles that visits a residential address. Concrete weighs roughly 4,000 lb per cubic yard, so a load of several yards is tens of thousands of pounds of product on top of a truck that is already heavy empty. Federal limits under 23 CFR 658.17 cap Interstate gross vehicle weight at 80,000 pounds, with single-axle and tandem-axle limits below that, and a loaded mixer runs in that territory.

A residential driveway is generally designed for passenger vehicles — 4 to 5 inches of concrete on a compacted base. Putting a fully loaded mixer on it concentrates load on a few axles over a small contact area, and the result is cracking, edge breaks, or a rutted, sunken slab. Older or thinner driveways fail immediately.

Soft ground is the other hazard. A truck that drops a wheel off a driveway edge into wet lawn will rut deeply and may get stuck, and a truck parked over a septic tank, leach field, cistern, or shallow utility can cause damage far more expensive than the concrete.

Most suppliers put responsibility for damage on the customer when the customer directs the truck off the public roadway. Read your delivery ticket before you wave the driver in.

What if the truck cannot reach the pour?

Three practical options move concrete from where the truck can park to where it belongs.

Chutes are the first and cheapest. Trucks carry a set of chute sections that extend some distance behind the truck, enough to reach a slab near the curb or the end of a driveway. Ask your supplier how far their chutes reach before you plan around it, since chute configuration varies by truck.

Wheelbarrows work for small pours and cost nothing but labor. Be honest about the labor: a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet of material weighing around 4,000 lb, which is more than a dozen heavy trips, and it has to be done fast enough that the concrete does not start setting. Two people and one barrow is not a plan for three yards.

A powered buggy carries far more per trip than a wheelbarrow and rents by the day, but it needs a reasonably firm, level path.

A concrete pump is the answer for anything genuinely inaccessible — a backyard slab behind a house, a basement floor, a pour above grade. Line pumps handle most residential work and boom pumps reach over obstacles. Pumping is a service you hire, and the American Concrete Pumping Association publishes safety guidance for the trade.

How do you set up the site before the truck arrives?

Have everything finished except the concrete. NRMCA’s guidance on ordering ready mixed concrete covers what the supplier needs from you: the volume, the strength, the slump, the delivery time, and honest information about access.

Walk the route the truck will take and clear it. Move vehicles, trailers, trash cans, and basketball hoops. Trim branches back. Mark the septic system, the well, the irrigation lines, and anything else that will not survive being driven over.

Lay plywood or ground protection mats anywhere the truck has to cross turf or a slab you care about. Sheets of ¾-inch plywood spread the load somewhat, though they will not make a residential driveway safe for a full load.

Designate a washout area before the truck arrives, not during. Drivers need somewhere to rinse the chute, and rinse water is highly alkaline and cannot go into a storm drain or a waterway.

Have a spotter, agree on hand signals, and keep everyone else out of the backing path. Have enough people and tools on site that the concrete never waits on you.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring the gate but not the mirrors — the body fits and the mirrors do not, and the delivery stops at the property line.
  • Waving the truck onto a residential driveway — a loaded mixer cracks flatwork designed for cars, and the delivery ticket usually puts that on you.
  • Assuming every supplier’s truck is the same size — capacity, chute reach, and wheelbase are set by each manufacturer and fleet, with no national standard.
  • Planning wheelbarrow access for a multi-yard pour — a cubic yard is around 4,000 lb, and the concrete will not wait for a short crew.
  • Not planning the exit — a truck that gets in and cannot get out becomes an expensive problem within minutes.
