Specialty & Engineered
Pervious, UHPC, GFRC, shotcrete, ICF and precast — engineered systems outside ordinary flatwork.
How to choose within specialty & engineered
These are engineered systems, specified rather than selected, and most carry installer certification or design requirements that ordinary flatwork does not.
Pervious concrete omits most of the fine aggregate so water passes through the slab into a stone reservoir below. It is an EPA-recognised stormwater best management practice, and it depends entirely on placement technique and on maintenance — a pervious slab that clogs stops being pervious. NRMCA runs a pervious contractor certification for this reason.
UHPC reaches strengths several times ordinary concrete and is used in thin structural sections and connections. GFRC is glass-fibre reinforced and made into thin architectural panels. Shotcrete is pneumatically placed against a surface rather than poured into forms, which suits pools, tunnels and repairs. ICF uses insulating forms that stay in place as the building envelope. Precast moves the pour into a controlled plant and delivers cured units to site.
