How do you break up concrete?

Break concrete from a free edge, not the middle. Work along the edge in small bites so each blow shears a piece off, undermining the slab with a digging bar as you go. A sledgehammer handles 4-inch unreinforced slabs; thicker or reinforced work needs a demolition hammer. Wet it down, because dry breaking releases silica.

Short version

What do you check before the first swing?

Call 811 first. The national call-before-you-dig service notifies your utility operators to mark buried lines, it is free, and it applies to breaking a slab that sits over a gas, electric, water, or communications line — which describes most driveways and many patios. Give it the lead time your state requires.

Then find out what is inside the slab. A post-tensioned slab contains steel tendons under high tension, and cutting or breaking one without identifying and de-tensioning it is dangerous; PTI is the industry reference, and post-tensioned residential slabs are common in parts of Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and California. Look for stamped markings on the slab edge or the garage wall, and stop if you find them. Radiant floor heating tubing and embedded conduit are the other two things people find with a breaker rather than before it.

Finally, decide whether the slab is structural. A patio, a walkway, or a garage floor on grade is one thing; a slab that supports a wall, a column, a suspended floor, or retained soil is another. If the concrete is holding something up, it needs an engineer’s input before demolition, not after.

Add a saw to any of these when you need a clean edge — a walk-behind saw cutting the slab into panels turns a demolition job into a lifting job. Note that saws in Table 1 require an integrated water delivery system that continuously feeds water to the blade.

Matching the tool to the slab matters more than brute force. A sledgehammer against a 6-inch reinforced driveway is a lost weekend; a 60 lb breaker against a thin patio slab shatters it into pieces too small to pick up efficiently.

How do you keep the silica dust out of your lungs?

Breaking concrete generates respirable crystalline silica, and OSHA regulates it under 29 CFR 1926.1153 with a permissible exposure limit of 50 µg/m³ and an action level of 25 µg/m³, both as 8-hour time-weighted averages. Table 1 gives the compliance route for the tools used here.

For jackhammers and handheld powered chipping tools, Table 1 requires either a tool with a water delivery system supplying a continuous stream or spray of water at the point of impact, or a shroud with a dust collection system. It adds respiratory protection at APF 10 for indoor or enclosed work and for outdoor work beyond four hours. Handheld power saws require the integrated water system, with the same duration and location logic for respirators.

The standard also prohibits dry sweeping or dry brushing where wet sweeping or HEPA vacuuming is feasible, restricts compressed air for cleaning, requires a written exposure control plan, and requires medical surveillance for anyone required to wear a respirator 30 or more days a year. A homeowner is not the target of the regulation, but a garden hose running on the breaking point costs nothing and removes most of the airborne dust. How do you break it efficiently?

Work from a free edge inward. Concrete breaks when a piece has somewhere to go, so the first hit at the middle of a slab does almost nothing while the same hit six inches from an edge shears a chunk loose. If there is no free edge, make one with a saw cut.

Undermine as you go. Dig out the soil or base under the edge with a digging bar or a shovel so the concrete can flex and snap downward, then take bites of six to eight inches at a time along the edge. A pry bar under the slab does more work than a bigger hammer, especially once the first row of pieces is out.

Keep pieces liftable. Chunks that two people can carry to the trailer beat a slab you have to break twice, and a piece that takes three people is a piece that will be dropped. Cut through mesh or rebar with bolt cutters or an angle grinder as it appears, and expect the reinforcement to hold the pieces together like a net until you do.

What do you do with the rubble?

Weigh the job before you rent the container. Normal-weight concrete runs about 4,000 lb per cubic yard, so a 10 ft × 10 ft slab at 4 inches thick is roughly 1.23 cubic yards, or about 2.5 tons of debris — see how much a yard of concrete weighs for the math. Dumpster weight limits are set by the hauler, and concrete fills the weight allowance long before it fills the box.

Recycle it rather than landfill it. EPA’s construction and demolition materials guidance treats concrete as a recoverable material, and most metropolitan areas have a crushing yard that accepts clean concrete — often at a lower tipping fee than mixed debris, sometimes free for clean loads. “Clean” means no rebar sticking out, no dirt, no wire mesh tangles, and no asphalt mixed in.

  • Starting in the middle of the slab — the energy goes into the ground instead of shearing a piece off; every hit near an edge is worth ten in the field.
  • Skipping the 811 call — a struck gas or electric line is a life-safety event and the locate service is free.
  • Breaking a post-tensioned slab — tendons are under high tension, and cutting one blind is genuinely dangerous.
  • Breaking dry — this is the task Table 1 was written for; water at the point of impact costs nothing.
  • Making pieces too big to carry — you will break them a second time, on the ground, with a worse angle.
