How do you stain concrete?

What is the difference between acid stain and water-based stain?

How do you prepare a slab for stain?
Preparation means getting the concrete clean, open, and bare. Any sealer, curing compound, paint, glue, wax, or oil blocks the stain and leaves blotches exactly where the contamination was. Remove old coatings by mechanical grinding, or by stripping followed by a thorough rinse.
Clean the bare slab with a neutral-pH cleaner or a dedicated concrete cleaner, then rinse and let it dry. Avoid muriatic acid washes as a general prep step; they can leave the surface too etched and unevenly reactive.
Test absorbency before you commit. Sprinkle water in several spots across the slab. Where it soaks in and darkens within a few seconds, the surface is open. Where it beads or sits on top, something is still sealing it. Repair cracks and patch spalls before staining, and expect patches to take color differently than the surrounding slab.
Mask everything you do not want colored. Stain wicks under tape and splashes onto baseboards, siding, and landscaping.
How do you apply concrete stain?
Apply stain in two thin coats rather than one heavy one. Use a pump sprayer with acid-resistant components for acid stain, working in a circular motion to avoid the straight lines and overlap marks that a back-and-forth pass leaves behind.
Keep a wet edge and work in manageable sections so nothing dries mid-pass. On acid stain, some crews follow the sprayer with a soft-bristle broom or brush to spread the reaction and soften hard edges. Let the first coat react before deciding whether the color is deep enough; acid stain looks very different wet than it does after neutralizing.
Acid stain typically needs several hours to react. After that, neutralize the surface with a baking soda solution until fizzing stops, then rinse and scrub away all residue. Rinse water carries stain chemicals, so collect and dispose of it properly rather than letting it run into a storm drain.
Let the slab dry completely before sealing. Trapped moisture under a sealer causes the same whitening and blistering that sealing green concrete does.
How long should new concrete cure before staining?
A common contractor guideline is to wait about 28 days before staining new concrete. That waiting period is industry practice rather than a published standard, and it exists for two reasons: the slab needs to finish releasing construction moisture, and the surface chemistry needs to stabilize so the color develops predictably.
New slabs are often sprayed with a membrane-forming curing compound. That compound must be removed before staining, so if you know a slab will be stained, tell the crew to cure it with water, blankets, or plastic instead.
Always follow the stain manufacturer’s data sheet on wait time. Product formulations differ, and the data sheet governs over any general rule.
Can you stain old or previously sealed concrete?
Old concrete stains well as long as you can get it back to bare, absorbent material. Age itself is not a problem; in fact, older slabs sometimes take acid stain more evenly because the surface has weathered uniformly.
Previously sealed slabs need the sealer completely gone. Partial removal is worse than none, because stain will penetrate the stripped areas and skip the rest, leaving a map of the old coating. Grind or strip the whole surface, then run the water-drop test across the entire area before you mix any stain.
Interior slabs that had tile, carpet, or vinyl usually carry adhesive residue and old patching compound. Both take color differently from the surrounding concrete, and cutback adhesive in particular must be fully removed.
What safety gear does acid staining need?
Acid stain requires eye protection, chemical-resistant gloves, and boots, because the carrier is acidic and it splashes. Add a respirator and forced ventilation for interior work, and keep the area clear of anyone not working the job.
The neutralizing step needs the same protection. Fresh acid stain residue on a slab stays reactive until it is neutralized and rinsed, so do not let pets or children onto the surface between application and final rinse.
Grinding or stripping a slab before staining creates respirable crystalline silica dust. Use water suppression or a HEPA-filtered vacuum on the grinder rather than running it dry.
Have clean water and the neutralizing solution mixed and within reach before you start, not after a splash. Keep containers labeled, and never combine products from two different stain systems.

- Skipping the test patch — every slab’s chemistry is different, and acid stain on the sample board never matches the finished floor.
