How do you stamp concrete?
Place and screed the slab normally, apply color, then press textured mats into the surface once the concrete is firm enough to hold the pattern but still soft enough to take it. Release agent keeps the mats from sticking. Wash the surface a day later, cure the slab, and seal it afterward.

What has to be ready before the pour?
Stamping is a timed operation, so every decision has to be made before concrete arrives. NRMCA’s flatwork guidance already warns that skill, manpower, and timing govern the outcome and that delays after the concrete arrives reduce the quality of the finished work — stamping compresses that further.
Lay the mats out in sequence next to the slab, in the order they will be used, and know the pattern layout including where the seams and the border fall. Decide which mat starts at which corner.
Staff the crew for the window, not for the pour. Someone applies release, two or more set and tamp mats, and someone stays ahead of the work checking that the surface is still taking the imprint evenly.
Complete all subgrade, forms, reinforcement, and embedments before delivery, and confirm the mix: typical flatwork slump is 3 to 5 inches, and adding water on site to buy working time reduces strength and durability while making the imprint worse.
Have the touch-up tools ready too — a texture skin for edges the mats cannot reach, and hand chisels for joint lines.
When do you stamp the slab?
Stamp when the surface no longer has bleed water on it and the concrete is stiff enough to hold a detailed imprint without sinking under the mat. The practical field check is a thumbprint: press a thumb into the surface and look for an impression roughly a quarter inch deep with no wet slurry.
Too early and the mats sink, the pattern edges collapse, and the paste closes back over the detail. Too late and the mats will not press in at all — you get a faint texture and a slab that has to be ground or overlaid.
That window is not a published number. It shifts with temperature, wind, humidity, mix design, and admixtures, and can range from under an hour on a hot windy day to several hours in cool weather. Watch the concrete, not the clock.
Test on a corner or in an area that will be cut by a joint. If the test impression holds sharply, start; if it tears or fills back in, wait.
The whole slab does not set at the same rate. The area placed first and the sunny edge stiffen ahead of the rest, so plan the stamping sequence to follow the set across the slab.
How do you color stamped concrete?
Color reaches stamped concrete three ways, and most jobs use two of them together. Integral color is batched into the mix at the plant, so the color runs all the way through the slab and never wears off — but it produces a uniform, flat tone on its own.
Color hardener is broadcast onto the surface after bull floating and worked in with a float. It concentrates pigment and hard aggregate in the wearing surface, giving stronger color and a harder top than integral color alone.
Release agent does double duty. Its job is to keep the mats from bonding to the concrete, and colored release leaves pigment in the low points of the texture, which is what produces the aged, two-tone look. Powder release doubles as a bond breaker and antiquing agent; liquid release is sprayed and does not add color.
Expect variation. NRMCA’s guidance on discoloration notes that concrete with a higher water-cementitious materials ratio is generally lighter in color, and that fly ash, slag cement, and silica fume all shift the base color. Order all the concrete for a stamped area from one producer and one mix.
How do you stamp step by step?
Stamping follows a fixed order once the slab is floated. Screed and bull float as with any slab, then broadcast color hardener if you are using it and float it in.
Wait for the bleed water to leave, then edge the perimeter and finish the surface to the texture the pattern needs — usually a float finish rather than a hard steel trowel.
Apply the release agent across the area you are about to stamp, not the whole slab. Set the first mat against the starting edge, align it, then tamp it with a stamp tamper until the pattern presses fully in. Walk mats where the crew has to stand.
Advance the mats in sequence, keeping the alignment true to the first row — a mat set slightly out of line multiplies across the slab. Work seams tight so the pattern reads continuous.
Detail after stamping: hand-tool the joints, touch up mat seams and edges with a texture skin, and finish the border. Cut control joints as required for the slab, planning them into the pattern rather than through it wherever possible.
Why does stamped concrete come out blotchy?
Blotchy color on stamped work comes from variation in the concrete and in the finishing, not usually from the stamps. NRMCA identifies inconsistent use of admixtures, insufficient mixing time, and improper timing of finishing operations as causes of surface discoloration.
Water is the biggest single lever. A higher water-cementitious materials ratio makes concrete lighter, so a load tempered with extra water, or an area where water was sprinkled during finishing, prints lighter than the rest. Flake calcium chloride that has not fully dissolved is another known cause of dark mottling.
Curing method shows up in the color too. Anything that touches the surface unevenly while it cures — plastic sheeting laid in wrinkles, coverings that alternately wet and dry — can leave a mottled record of itself. NRMCA notes that light patches of discoloration can also come from efflorescence, where dissolved salts deposit on the surface as water evaporates.
Consistency is the fix: one mix design, one producer, uniform finishing timing across the slab, and a single curing method applied the same way everywhere.
How do you cure and seal stamped concrete?
Cure stamped concrete like any other slab, for 3 to 7 days, keeping it damp and above 50 °F (10 °C). Decorative work does not get a shorter cure because it looks finished sooner.
Wash off the powder release before curing or sealing, typically the day after stamping, using water and a stiff broom. How much release you leave in the low spots determines the final antiquing, so wash a test area first and step back to look at it dry.
Choose a curing method that does not print on the surface. Plastic sheeting is the usual culprit on decorative work; water-based curing or a curing compound compatible with the sealer you plan to use avoids the problem.
Seal after the slab has released enough construction moisture, commonly around 28 days. Sealing early traps moisture and causes whitening and blistering — which is far more visible on a colored slab than on a plain one. Follow the sealer manufacturer’s data sheet for the surface condition and temperature it requires.
Common mistakes
- Stamping outside the imprint window — too early sinks the mats, too late leaves a faint texture that cannot be fixed on the surface.
- Adding water on site to extend working time — it lightens the color, weakens the surface, and blurs the imprint.
- Using concrete from more than one mix or producer — color varies batch to batch and the difference lands in the middle of the slab.
- Curing under wrinkled plastic — the sheeting prints a mottled pattern into decorative work.
- Sealing before the slab has dried out — trapped moisture whitens and blisters, and it shows badly on colored concrete.
